I'm usually quiet on political matters but I can't help but point out Obama's political-ness when answering questions pertaining to faith and things like abortion. Here is a link to a blog that reviews the discussion held by Rick Warren with McCain and Obama...Pro-Choice or Pro-human rights? Which would you choose?
I am a moderate and believe in things like Social Justice and helping the poor. I don't like big business without some sort of social governance, but I am in favor of a government that helps small companies succeed. But when it comes down to it, the Bible, ethics, and basic human rights are what shape my decision when it comes to abortion. Places like Planned Parenthood don't give an opportunity for that human life to continue living, they don't expound to the woman the blessings of adoption or give help to the woman that decides to keep the baby...they only way planned parenthood stays in business is by women continuing to get abortions. It's come full circle--what probably was intended as a way to help women out has become dependent on women continuing to have abortions to keep their business going.
I don't think enough is being done by either side to end abortion and promote abstinence until marriage or to make raising a child any easier on single mothers, and that is what needs to change. No life is worth more than any other, we are all created equal and should be given an equal chance to live.
This issue just shows us how depraved our world has become. We just keep becoming more desensitized to death, murder, extreme poverty, and other sinful acts that it doesn't even phase us. What was once seen as freeing (as in getting away from the rules) is now what condemns us.
For those of us who believe in Jesus as the only way to salvation and truly believe what the Bible teaches about how we should react to poverty, homosexuality, abortion, sexual immorality, and adultery (affairs, sex out of marriage, pornography); we must stand firm against it while teaching others the Biblical truth about what we should all be doing to counteract them. God loves all of us, all of us sinners, and wants us to come to repentance and a knowledge of His truth and saving Grace through Jesus. Without repentance we remain lost sheep...
Human rights does not mean we all have freedom to do what we want, it means there are certain privileges that are available to each human life, like laws that protect that life.

Well written. My view, and I'll stick to one point:
Planned Parenthood does, in fact, counsel on options. The options are abortion, adoption, and parenting.
Our youth need to be educated about birth control options. I agree that one very important option is abstinence. In fact, PP has endorsed 14 value statements, one of which is "Abstaining from sexual intercourse is the most effective method of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections." This can be found in their curriculum document, "Teaching About Responsible Choices for Sexual Health."
It's about complete information. You may also find it interesting to know that abortions constituted only 3% of PP's services in 2006 (the last year for which data was available). I urge you to just check out the website, and find out more about it.

40 million abortions since roe v. wade. 40 million lives not allowed to have a full life. 40 million people that could have developed amazing new technologies or found a cure for AIDS, etc.
For more on what the Bible says about human life see: Jeremiah 1:5, Psalm 139:13, Ecclesiastes 11:5, Luke 1:41.

Interesting that you deleted a comment? I was only able to glance at the article that someone posted, but did see that it was referring to Mccain's statement regarding abortion. Here's his statement: "I'd love to see a point where it is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary," McCain told the Chronicle in 1999. "But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations."
Interesting...And I also find it interesting that he cheated on his first wife.
On the issue of Planned Parenthood and other clinics, they are not the CAUSE of abortion. Let's just get that straight. And unless you've been to any of those clinics (and are a woman in need of those services), don't speak as if you know what kind of services they offer. Furthermore, doctors in hospitals also perform abortions and get this, some insurance companies even cover it. Everyone agrees that 40 million is a lot. When someone states that they are pro-choice, they are not stating that they are pro-abortion. Nobody WANTS people to have abortions. The issue comes down to education, available and affordable healthcare services and access to options for all woman, men and families. But when our government decides they want to limit education, limit available and affordable healthcare and limit options, then we have a problem with not providing BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS.
On basic human rights, we are all HUMAN. Black, white, gay, lesbian, rich and poor. You say, “certain privileges that are available to each human life” so, why does the Church (and the government) treat homosexuals as if they are a disease and don’t deserve the same HUMAN rights as everyone else? I’ll say it again-- we are all HUMAN. We all breath the same air, we all feel emotions, we all have dreams and aspirations, and we all share this world together, doing the best we can to survive. We all deserve the same basic human rights.
Hi Kristi,
I only deleted the comment because I felt it was irrelevant. I'm not even sure I know who I'm going to vote for yet. I had just wanted to comment on how Obama stepped around the question of Abortion and then I went on to discuss how I see abortion and the human life. If you look at my post I state that I'm mostly for big business regulation, for programs to help the poor, education, etc. (Most of those views are not republican.) I have some weighing to do on the importance of all those issues, and which takes precedent in this election.
Now to reply to the rest of your post. I also find it disheartening that McCain cheated on his first wife. But at the same time there is forgiveness because he has recognized it as one of his biggest failures and has repented of that sin. Just like there is forgiveness for those women who have abortions, there is forgiveness for homosexuals, for those who engage in extramarital sex, for those that steal, etc, etc...but only after repentance or a turning away from that sin. This also only done through the power of Holy Spirit.
As far as hospitals offering abortions; I am aware that happens. It's not just Planned Parenthood, but PP is the biggest advocate for keeping abortion an "option." Therefore, they are very much so going to receive the brunt of anti-abortion commentary. I am also aware that when a hospital or a doctor refuses to do an abortion that it causes a great upheaval. If we are pro-choice when it comes to abortion, why can't we be pro-choice when it comes to a doctor saying no?
As far as services offered at PP, as Jessica pointed out, you can see them freely on their website. I've been to a planned parenthood before, researched their information, etc. I've also read many articles that are for and against PP. So I feel that I can come to an informed conclusion about the services they offer. Ultimately, the Bible is the ethical model that I use to process these mainline issues...
I'm not disagreeing with you about basic human rights; the right to life being the main one. I'm having a hard time understanding how the church and government are limiting those rights to homosexuals? Gays and Lesbians have full access to healthcare, they can get a driver's license, they can eat next to heterosexuals. As you said, we all live together in this world. The only difference is that we are being honest about what is right and what is wrong? I believe there is a right and a wrong, it's not just whatever you (as in individuals) believe is right or wrong.
You also have to understand that I base my moral decisions on the Bible, it is the only truth. So if you don't believe in the Bible, it's authenticity and inerrancy then we have to start this discussion at a different point, which is the depravity of the world and all in it, caused by sin and then conversion through faith in Christ.
However, if you believe in God, and Jesus as Savior, and the Bible as His Living Word, then please see this link that sums up a Biblical view on homosexuality: http://www.faithfacts.org/christ-and-the-culture/gay-rights.
If you'd like we can continue discussing these issues and our points of view in a more private manner...email works for me.
I'll email you in the next couple days to discuss further.
